What is TPO?
TPO, or Thermoplastic Olefin (Polyolefin) is the fastest growing commercial roof system and Fuchs Roofing is a top rated TPO roofing contractor amongst commercial building owners in St. Louis, MO. TPO is a single-ply roofing membrane that is perfect for commercial flat and low slope roofing. It’s most distinguishable by its white color. The unique white color is reflective which makes it an extremely energy efficient option. TPO is available in three thicknesses and can last up to 30-years. TPO can be fully adhered, mechanically fastened, or ballasted. Fully-adhered means that the roof is “glued” to the substrate using a special adhesive. Mechanically attached TPO uses screws and plates to secure it in place. Ballasted simply means the membrane is loose laid over the top of the roof, sealed at all penetrations and around the perimeter, and then a ballast is put on it to hold it in place. Ballast usually consists of smooth rock that is applied at a rate of 1,000 to 1,200 pounds per roof square (100 sq. ft.). Sometimes concrete pavers are used in their place. These average 20 pounds per square foot. Another notable feature is that TPO is heat-welded at the seams. This bonds each roll of TPO together which makes them less likely to separate. When installed correctly, TPO roof systems also have a high resistance to fire, punctures, and high winds.
